Teacher workshops: understanding neutrinos

Online

05JunThe inside of a Super-Kamiokande, a neutrino particle detector.

We have two virtual workshops coming up to support teachers to deliver two physics activities aimed at GCSE students who are considering doing physics at A Level and beyond. Science and Maths teachers will learn how to deliver two different classroom based activities. The workshops will be delivered by Professor Jeanne Wilson, a Professor in Particle Physics here at King’s College London.

Register now on our Eventbrite page.

Workshop details

The free virtual workshops will be offered on the following dates:

  • 05 June 4-5pm
  • 19 June 4-5pm

The two workshops will cover different topics. You are welcome to sign up to either or both workshops.

The sessions will take place over Zoom. In order to make the most of this interactive webinar, we recommend you join from a laptop / computer.

5th June - What is a Neutrino?

This workshop is primarily aimed at maths and science teachers, but all are welcome.

Activity description: In this activity you’ll uncover the mysteries of neutrinos, the elusive particles that pass through matter almost undetected. You’ll not only learn what neutrinos are and their role in the universe, but you'll also develop essential maths skills. Through guided exercises, you’ll estimate probabilities related to neutrino detection and calculate their velocities, applying real-world data and scenarios. This activity combines particle physics with practical mathematical applications.

19th June - Neutrinos: changing identity

This workshop is primarily aimed at science teachers, but all are welcome.

Activity description: Discover the bizarre and mysterious world of neutrinos! You'll get to measure them in real-life experiments and explore the gigantic Super-Kamiokande in Japan. Plus, you'll step into the shoes of a physicist, identifying different types of neutrinos from an event display.

How to register

Register for a place in one of the workshops via the Eventbrite page. The deadline for registering for events is 09.00 on the event day. Tickets will be offered on a first come, first served basis.
